Council Hosts Integrity in Admissions and Recruiting Panel

On Wednesday, November 7, 2018, Duke Honor Council hosted a panel discussion, titled Integrity in Admissions and Recruiting. Panelists included Dean Christoph Guttentag of Undergraduate Admissions, Dean Gerald Wilson of pre-law advising, Dr. Chris Roy of pre-health advising, Ms. Leanne Brown of the Career Center, and Ms. Colleen Scott of the Baldwin Scholars Program.

The panel discussion focused on issues of ethics and integrity that arise in application-based opportunities. These opportunities range from admission to Duke, to joining organizations while still at Duke, to graduate education and careers.

The discussion was lively and informative. Panelists discussed topics such as authenticity in applications, owning up to one’s past mistakes should they arise while applying, how to adequately and ethically provide financial aid, and the importance of integrity in an applicant.

Audience members were curious to hear more about the other side – namely, how those reviewing applications approach the process with integrity. This allowed for an interesting conversation on affirmative action in light of the recent lawsuit brought against Harvard University.

Duke Honor Council would like to thank all those who made this event possible, from our panelists to our audience members. We hope to see you at future events!
